If you run a limited company in the UK, you will need to use Companies House online services to keep your company information up to date, file your confirmation statement and submit certain company documents. However, the login process has changed, and company directors now also need to understand the new identity verification rules.
In this guide, we explain how to log in to Companies House WebFiling, how to submit a confirmation statement online and how to verify your identity using GOV.UK One Login or an authorised agent.
How do I log in to Companies House WebFiling?
You can access Companies House WebFiling through the official government website:
Log in to Companies House WebFiling
WebFiling allows you to submit your company’s confirmation statement, file eligible annual accounts, update director information and make other changes to your company’s details.
Since 13 October 2025, users have needed to connect their WebFiling accounts to GOV.UK One Login to access the service. If you have not completed this process, follow the instructions on the official website to connect your account.
You should use an email address that you can access because you may need it to sign in and complete security checks. You may also be asked to enter your company’s authentication code to confirm that you are authorised to file documents for that company.
If you already use other Companies House services, check that your account details are correct and follow the instructions shown when you log in.
What is the difference between Companies House WebFiling and a Companies House account?
Companies House provides different online services, and it is easy to confuse them because they deal with the same company information.
WebFiling is mainly used to submit company documents, including confirmation statements and eligible annual accounts. Your Companies House account, accessed through the Find and update company information service, allows you to manage company information and access other features.
GOV.UK One Login is the sign-in service that can be used to access these government services. It does not replace the legal requirement to file company documents, and connecting an account to GOV.UK One Login is not the same as verifying your identity for Companies House.
You may need to connect your existing accounts or follow separate instructions depending on which service you want to use.
Where can I find the Companies House login confirmation statement page?
To file a confirmation statement online, visit the official Companies House WebFiling service and sign in using your connected GOV.UK One Login account.
You will generally need your company’s details and its authentication code, which helps confirm that you are authorised to file for the company. You should then select the relevant company and follow the instructions to complete the confirmation statement.
Before submitting it, check the information carefully, including the registered office address, directors, shareholders and people with significant control (PSCs), where relevant.
If the company details have changed, you may need to report those changes through the appropriate process rather than simply confirming that everything is correct.
A confirmation statement is not the same as annual accounts, and filing one does not remove the requirement to submit accounts when they are due.
What is a Companies House confirmation statement?
A confirmation statement, previously known as an annual return, is a document that confirms that the information Companies House holds about your company is correct and complete.
Every UK company, including dormant and non-trading companies, must file a confirmation statement at least once every 12 months. You must still file it if nothing has changed during the review period.
The statement may include information about your company’s directors, shareholders, registered details, share capital and people with significant control, depending on the company and the information that needs confirming.
Companies House also requires companies to confirm that their intended future activities are lawful. You should check the information before submitting the statement because inaccurate or missing details may cause problems with your filing.
If you need help understanding the difference between your company’s filing obligations, read our guide to limited company tax deadlines and accounts costs in the UK.
How much does it cost to file a Companies House confirmation statement?
The standard online filing fee for a confirmation statement is £50. This is an annual fee, rather than a monthly payment, and it is normally collected when you submit the statement.
If you submit another confirmation statement within the same payment year, you generally do not have to pay the fee again for that period.
The fee is separate from the cost of preparing your company’s annual accounts or submitting a Corporation Tax return to HMRC. These are different responsibilities, even though they may all form part of your company’s annual compliance work.
You should check the current Companies House fee guidance before submitting a filing, as fees and filing rules can change.
How do I verify my identity for Companies House?
Identity verification is now a legal requirement for company directors and people with significant control (PSCs), with the timing depending on their role and circumstances.
You can usually verify your identity through GOV.UK One Login or by using an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), such as an eligible accountant or solicitor.
To start online verification, use the official government service:
Verify your identity for Companies House
You will be guided through the identity-checking process and may need to provide information from an accepted identity document. The precise steps depend on your circumstances and the verification method you choose.
Once your identity has been verified, you will receive a Companies House personal code. This is a unique code used to connect your verified identity to your company records.
Keep the code safe and do not confuse it with your company’s authentication code. They serve different purposes: your personal code relates to your identity, while the company authentication code helps confirm that you are authorised to file for a company.
Do I need to verify my identity before filing a confirmation statement?
Yes, the new requirements mean that companies must provide the Companies House personal code for each director as part of the relevant confirmation statement filing and confirm that the directors have verified their identities.
Companies House will not accept a confirmation statement until the required director identity verification information has been provided.
If your company has several directors, make sure each director completes the required process and gives you their correct personal code before you attempt to submit the statement.
Directors who manage more than one company should also check the requirements for each company because the personal code must be provided in the relevant company filings.
People with significant control must also complete identity verification and provide their personal code according to the timetable that applies to them.
What is a Companies House personal code?
A Companies House personal code is a unique 11-character code issued after an individual successfully verifies their identity.
The code links the verified individual to their Companies House records. It is not the same as a Government Gateway login, a GOV.UK One Login password or a company’s authentication code.
If you verified your identity through GOV.UK One Login, you can sign in to your Companies House account and look under Manage account to find your code. If you verified through an ACSP, Companies House sends the code to the email address provided during the verification process.
Check that the details associated with your code match the information Companies House holds about you. If your personal details are incorrect or the code does not work, follow the official guidance before trying to submit your confirmation statement again.
Can my accountant verify my identity for Companies House?
Yes, an accountant who is registered as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider can verify clients’ identities if they meet the relevant Companies House requirements.
This can be helpful if you are not comfortable completing the process yourself or would prefer professional assistance. The accountant must carry out the required checks and report the verification through the appropriate Companies House service.
Not every accountant is automatically authorised to provide this service, so check that your accountant is registered as an ACSP before relying on them to verify your identity.
If you want to understand the identity checks accountants carry out, read our guide on why an accountant may need to check your ID.
What should I do if I cannot log in to Companies House WebFiling?
If you cannot access WebFiling, first check that you are using the official login page and that your GOV.UK One Login details are correct.
Make sure you can access the email address associated with your account and complete any security checks requested on the screen. If the service asks you to connect your existing WebFiling account, follow the instructions carefully.
If you have forgotten your password, use the official password recovery process rather than creating unnecessary duplicate accounts. You may also need your company’s authentication code if Companies House asks you to confirm that you are still authorised to file for the company.
If you can log in but cannot submit a confirmation statement, check whether all the required directors have verified their identities and whether you have their correct personal codes. You should also check that the company’s details are accurate and that you are using the appropriate filing service.
For help with dormant companies, you can also read our guide on how to file dormant company accounts.
What happens if I do not file my confirmation statement on time?
Failing to file a confirmation statement can lead to enforcement action by Companies House, and your company may eventually be struck off the register if it does not meet its legal obligations.
The requirement applies even if your company has stopped trading or has had no income during the year. Dormant companies still have to meet their confirmation statement filing requirements.
You should check the company’s next filing date using the official Companies House register and submit the statement promptly when it is due. It is also sensible to keep reminders for both your confirmation statement and annual accounts because they have separate deadlines.
If you use an accountant, agree who is responsible for preparing and submitting each filing so that nothing is missed.
Where can I find official help with Companies House login webfiling?
For the latest instructions, use the official government services rather than relying on old login links or unofficial websites.
